Coggan Family Aquatic Complex

Envisioning an Aquatic Complex for Future Generations

Over the past two decades, the Coggan has come to stand for excellence: a place where children learn to swim safely, youth grow into champions, and adults stay strong and active.

On any given day, the Coggan’s Olympic size swimming pool bustles with activity. It is the home pool for:

  • The physical education programs of La Jolla High School and Muirlands Middle School

  • La Jolla High School swim and water polo teams

  • La Jolla United water polo

  • Wind n’ Sea Swim Team and Masters Swimming

As the Coggan approaches its 20-year anniversary, the Board of the La Jolla Aquatic Complex Foundation has launched a $4.1 million capital campaign to address critical maintenance issues and make enhancements to better serve the community. We envision a state-of-the-art facility that inspires excellence in all swimmers and will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Why are renovations needed?

The original Coggan pool, built in 2002, has served thousands of families and inspired a lifelong love of swimming—a passion that is now being passed down to a new generation.

After more than two decades of daily use, the pool and pool deck are well past their expected lifespan. The widely accepted cycle within the industry for commercial pool resurfacing is 7–10 years. With the exceptional maintenance performed by Aquatic Director Randy Franke and staff, the pool remains operational, but the clock is ticking. Deterioration is reaching a point where cracks are visible and a major leak occurred in 2020 that required repair. Waiting longer will result in more significant leaks and damage to the pool structure with resulting pool closures.

With repairs imminent, the Board recognized a timely opportunity to make additional facility improvements that will benefit the community for years to come.

What will this mean for Members and the Community?

The planned enhancements will include:

1. World Class Swimming Facility:

The first priority of the campaign is to resurface the pool and fully replace the existing concrete deck to ensure that the Coggan can continue to provide a safe and nationally competitive facility. The pool and deck are well past their expected lifespan and resurfacing is urgently needed to avoid damage and preserve the Coggan for the future.

2: An Exterior Refresh and Renew:

The entire facility exterior will be painted to provide a refresh of the exterior.  New high efficiency LED lighting will be retrofitted onto the existing light pole systems that provide the pool's vibrant early morning and late evening practice sessions.

3: Better Amenities

The existing locker rooms/changing areas will be refreshed and upgraded with more efficient lighting, better ventilation through the replacement of existing supply and exhaust fans and new sink fixtures and trim as well as all new bathroom partitions. Outdoor showers will also be expanded with the addition of a new added privacy wall. The beloved 10-person spa will be replaced with a new 17-person spa, providing a much-needed larger gathering space for members and the community.

4: Community Space/Classroom:

The community meeting room will be expanded and enhanced with upgraded AV equipment. This area will be available for community education programs such as lifeguarding and wellness programs. Physical Education teachers will have access to a larger space for video instruction and discussion with their students. Coaches and athletes can use this area for meetings and to preview video/training materials.

Project Cost & Schedule

The total cost to rebuild all pool structures and complete the improvements summarized above is $4.1 million. Renovations are scheduled to begin in Summer of 2023 with grand re-opening in Fall of 2023.

Together, we can ensure that the Coggan will be available to be enjoyed for generations to come.

The Board of the La Jolla Aquatic Center Foundation, responsible for the care and operations of the Coggan, has raised $3.3 million towards the $4.1 million goal, including a $1 million leadership gift from the Coggan Family.
